The opioid crisis led to over 70,000 drug overdose deaths in the U.S. in 2018. It is one of the worst drug crises in American history, causing more deaths annually than car crashes or guns, and leaving many children orphaned. Eugene O'Neill's magnum opus, Long Day's Journey into Night, traces the drug addiction in his own family as a deeply rooted cultural problem.
